about
I wrote the bones of this song in the spring of 2023, initially in a different key, with loads of fuzz and chunky palm muting. After living in it for a while, I decided to move it to a more dynamic and melodic place, conscious majors and minors, and a strong presence of synthy textures. The song is about the financial, physical, psychological checks and balances of working life while the hellish Mordorian landscape of capitalism rages on in the background.
Drums were recorded at The Space here in Lethbridge with the help of resident deadhead, @globalacidreset. I find his sage wisdom, strict learned process, and keen ear always bring out the best stuff for me. Hell yea.
Anywho, I took it all home and tracked and mixed the rest in my bedroom. Those with a discriminating ear can probably pick those former details out of these mixes, but when you don’t have two beans to rub together, you make it work. I think it even turned out ok.
lyrics
Took a shit-shoveling job
In lieu of a dream state
Lost, knee deep, compliant for reliable pay
Now I stare into the darkness
where green grasses once grew
And on my front step,
another empty mailbox
Staring down the barrel of
Late-stage capital
My mind it tired, my knees are weak!
Slugging away in the salt mine
Staring down the barrel of
Late-stage capital
My throat is dry, my nose is plugged
Slugging away in the salt mine
